This is an Information Literacy lesson plan that will take place over 13 class sessions. Students will first choose a career to explore, and will use the internet to research chosen career. Students will then take what they�ve learned about their career and conduct a job search on the Internet. In the end, students will present their findings to the class. This class will be collaboratively taught with the Family and Consumer Science teacher.

Instructional Goals:

1. Students will be able to find reliable resources on the internet.
2. Students will understand the job-hunting process, including knowing how to select appropriate keywords
3. Students will present information clearly, completely, and concisely
4. Students will learn about a chosen profession

 

Learning Objectives: 

1. Students will conduct internet searches to find 2 relevant job-posting sites and 3 reliable and trustworthy sites relevant to their chosen profession.
2. Students will write down the keyword choices they’ve used in finding appropriate job postings on the internet.
3. Students will create a short PowerPoint presentation that highlights the major requirements of the profession and will present to the class.
4. Students will use various internet resources to demonstrate what they have learned about their chosen profession.

 

Motivational Goals:

1. Students will understand the importance of researching careers.
2. Students will become confident in their abilities to use the Internet for research by researching a useful topic.
3. Students will become confident in their abilities to use software applications to present information.
4. Students will become interested in learning about careers.

Introduction

(days 1 & 2):

The teacher will discuss what a career is, including the differences between a career and a job.

The teacher will discuss that in order to start a career, a person must first learn about it, and meet the educational and experience requirements.

The LMS should include information on the LMS career, to give an example.

Explain what was involved in getting into this career: the education requirements, preferred work history, preferred personality traits, certification process and requirements.

Lead a classroom discussion about different careers.

Ask students what careers they might know about.

Ask about the suspected requirements.

The LMS will discuss the job-searching process.

Lead a classroom discussion on what the students already know about conducting a job-search, and the major job-posting sites on the Internet.

The teacher will explain the assignment and highlight the future usefulness of this assignment.

 

Body:

(days 3, 4, 5)

Refresh assignment’s goals.

Students will work individually in the computer lab.

LMS will roam around the room checking on students and answering their questions, providing assistance.

Students will keep a journal with their notes on what they are learning about their chosen profession, as well as the sites they are visiting, the keywords they are choosing, and the overall search process they are using.

 

(days 6, 7)

Refresh assignment’s goals.

Lead discussion on what keywords the students chose and which ones worked and didn’t work – discuss why.

Instruct students that they will now take what they’ve learned about their chosen professions and conduct a job search using the internet.

Provide an example of how to choose a relevant job-posting site, and how to select search criteria for that particular job search – use an example of a career that none of the students have chosen.

 

(days 8, 9)

Refresh assignment’s goals.

Provide the guidelines for the presentation.

Give a sample presentation.

Students will work individually on the computers to create their PowerPoint presentations

 

(days 10 & 11)

Refresh of the job-search process.

Explain what a BuILder activity is.

Demonstrate how to use the BuILder program.

Students will work individually on the Job searching builder.

 

Conclusion:

(days 12 & 13)

Students will present their PowerPoint presentations that they have created.

Students will share their experiences in the process of learning about their chosen profession, conducting a search on the Internet to investigate the profession, and their thoughts of the job-hunting process .
