Description:
Short paper (5-7 pp.) in which the student interviews a person from a different cultural or ethnic background and finds scholarly sources from the social sciences literature that are relevant to this cultural group.

Librarian conducts one session covering scholarly publishing in sociology, Boolean searching, subject versus keyword searching. Librarian conducts brief individual follow-up sessions with students designated by the prof. Bibliography must have at least 3 articles and 1 book.
Goals & Objectives:

Students understand the purpose of bibliographic databases to a discipline of study.

 

Students can construct a Boolean search that retrieves articles relevant to the research topic.

 

Students can distinguish between scholarly publications (peer-reviewed) and general news & opinion publications.

Materials & Sources:

Powerpoint file, including flow chart of publishing in the social sciences, and Boolean operators, and relevant databases and how to find them.

 

List of paper topics.

 

Rubric for the bibliography.

 

 

 

 

Procedures:

Librarian conducts one session covering scholarly publishing in sociology, Boolean searching, subject versus keyword searching. Librarian conducts brief individual follow-up sessions with students designated by the prof.

 

Students receive rubric for the paper's bibliography to use as a guide.  Professor uses the rubric to assess bibliography and assign points towards overall grade for the paper.

 

Students email their preliminary list of sources to the professor from within the database's output method.
