Commemorating Great Women Poets
Description:
This lesson (unit) was designed for 9-12th grade students to grapple with the notion of achievement, to explore the creative process and to hone their researching skills.
Goals & Objectives:

Information Literacy Skill(s):

Ø      Planning:  Formulating a search strategy

                         Identifying potential information sources.

                        Creating a general framework for organizing information found

Ø      Exploration: Accessing information resources

Ø      Collection:  Extracting information from selected resources

Ø      Organization: Summarizing and synthesizing gathered information

                                     Sequencing selected information

                                     Organizing information for presentation

Ø      Presentation: Selecting most appropriate format for communicating results (& writing a poem)

                                   Presenting results

Ø      Evaluation: Evaluating the end product

 

Instructional Goals: 

Ø      Students will access information effectively and efficiently

Ø      Students will become familiar with the navigation of a specific website

Ø      Students will successfully find samples of “their” poet from online catalogue

Ø      Students will determine the accuracy, relevance, and comprehensiveness of Web resources

Ø      Students will present information in a prescribed format

Ø      Students will familiarize themselves with several different poetry “formats” and try their hand!

 

Learning Objectives: 

Ø      Students will successfully locate a specific website and extract biographical data from the correct link.

Ø      Students will successfully navigate through an electronic database and record pertinent data.

Ø      Students will create a flow chart, chronologically highlighting events from biographical data.

Ø      [When given a list of three Web sites and a set of evaluation criteria,] students will be able to determine their accuracy, relevance, and comprehensiveness for use as resources in a research project.

Ø      Students will perform a successful search of an online poetry catalog and find three poems of a given poet.

Ø      Students will find their “Comfort Zone” with poetry and create a “Bio-Poem” presentation of their poet.

Motivational Goals:

Ø      To generate interest in the research process.

Ø      To build the students’ confidence in their ability to learn/use information skills and to view themselves as “thinkers and achievers” – like these poets who persevered.

Ø      To motivate the students to continue to use information skills after the lesson.

Ø      To encourage the students’ sense of mastery and stimulate the creative writing process.

Ø      To promote the students’ satisfaction in their research and writing accomplishments AND to have fun with words.

Graphic organizers. KWL chart to activate prior knowledge and, prepare students for what’s next.

Projector, “notebook program” on writing tablet, computers, locating & recording worksheets (wksht #1,2)

Procedures:

Introduction:  DAY 1

Ø      Students are asked to write down what they know about

      four women, one a poet

 

Ø      Library Teacher introduces teaching point of lesson, technology to be utilized, and website URL’s (including EBSCO database)

 

Ø      Students work with buddies to navigate around the websites and databases, answering questions

 

Ø      Students share their answers with whole group and discuss the websites

 

Ø      Students make predictions about which websites will help them locate data for inquiry

 

Body: DAY 2 – Summary of previous day’s  work

Ø      Teacher Librarian lets students pick out their “poet”

Ø      “Pairs” locate and read the biography of their poet on website and Database

Ø      Students will retrieve and record significant chronologic events

Ø      Students will record and organize facts on a flow chart or timeline.

Ø      Students will share information with large group

Ø      Summary of major events, challenges faced and achievements

 

Body (Continued)

Day 3 – Summary of previous day’s work

Ø      Partner pairs locate online catalog of poems

Ø      Students will choice poems; copy and date them

Ø      Students will discuss the life of their poet, placing the poems chronologically and review various poetry formats (from previous lessons)

 

Ø      Students will practice reading to each other

 

Ø      Students will discuss as a group their experiences and summarize findings.

 

Day 4 – Summary of previous day’s work

Ø      Classroom teacher will review the various poetry formats

Ø      Partner pairs will pick a format and write a poem to highlight the major “stages” in the poet’s life.

 

Ø      Students will edit poems, type, save and print on computers

Ø      Students will share among themselves.

Ø      Summary of day’s work

 

Conclusion:

Day 5 -- Summarize the week of Commemorating Women Poets

Ø      Discuss researching experience

Ø      Students will evaluate the websites and database

Ø      Partner pairs will perform their poems – enjoying each other’s presentations

Ø      Students will discuss the achievements of these women!

 

Ø      Students will share and summarize their experiences
