Procedures:

Introduction:

·         LMS shows 2 commercials from states/destination that promote tourism to their destination

·         LMS shows several European travel websites and shows students how to navagate sites

·         Class discusses places they’ve traveled to or would like to visit

·         Model how to download a picture from the internet.  Provide students with a “how-to” hand-out of instructions on saving images to their network folders.

·         LMS distributes a variety of travel brochures from a travel agency to show students what a real travel brochure looks like

·         Class discusses what makes the travel brochures appealing

·         LMS distributes a work sheet with several questions to answer

·         Students are advised of the objective:  “To create a 1-page brochure about a travel destination that informs and entices their fellow students to learn about and want to visit the destination they’re promoting”

·         LMS will teach techniques necessary to prepare the brochure on the computer.

·         Students are advised that they will have 5 periods to complete this assignment.  Three periods will take place in the library and two will be in the computer lab.  They will have two days to conduct research in the library and have two days to experiment with design in the computer lab.

·         The final period will be used to present their brochures to the class and answer questions about what they have learned.

Body:

·         Students are provided with specific vacation destinations to research

·         Students are paired-up to work together on the project

·         Students should share their knowledge about the designed travel destination

·         Students will evaluate each others skillset and divide/conquer the task based on individual expertise

·         Every group will be provided with a laptop and use the web as the main source for collecting information

·         Students will visit computer lab after library lesson to have additional time to collect information about their destination

Conclusion:

Class will be asked the following questions:

  • Is there a destination they would like to visit based on the locations presented.
  • How much do they think it costs to visit these places?   Is there a less expensive way to travel?  Are they familiar with hostels?  Do they know what a Zimmer is or Room to Let?

  • In closing, we will discuss what it would be like to stay in a hostel and backpack in Europe.  Since there is such a diverse population, this exercise should foster more dialogue between the students and increase their curiosity.  Students will be better prepared to conduct research and ideally explore more about hostels, and backpacking/camping.
Assessment:
• Class discussions will determine students pre/post-knowledge
• Observations during research process
• Feedback from Computer Teacher during class time for research
• Design and delivery of brochure
