Earth Day & Recycling
Description:
1st graders will learn about the purpose of Earth Day and why/what we recycle. Students will listen to a story, then practice recycling various items in front of the class. Students will then play an online recycling game to reinforce their learning. Towards the end of the class, students will learn two songs revolving around Earth Day. This lesson was planned around the Science Curriculum and is a beginner's introduction to the library and computers.
Goals & Objectives:

Instructional Goals:

·         Students will understand:

  •
    •  why we recycle
    •  how to recycle
    •  what to recycle

Learning Objectives:

·         Students will learn:

o       the negative impacts to the environment when we litter

o       the difference between the brown and blue garbage pails

o       what items we can and can not place in the blue garbage pail

Motivational Goals:

·         Increase student’s knowledge on our individual impact on the environment.

·         Stress the importance of following rules and being responsible for our actions.

·         Build confidence in participating in a group and individual information literacy exercise.

·         Promote student’s satisfaction in their problem solving accomplishments.

·         Motivate students to continue to recycle and learn more about our earth and the products we consume/discard.

Materials & Sources:

·         Clifford’s Spring Clean-Up by Norman Bridwell

·         Earth Day songs adapted to Nursery Rhymes

·         Laptops / Internet

o       Website: http://funschool.kaboose.com/globe-rider/earth-day/games/game_clean_up_your_world.html - Earth Day Game

·         Brown Garbage Pail

·         Blue Recycling Garbage Pail

·         Plastic bottle, glass jar, banana peel, newspaper, metal can, chewed-up piece of gum, old sock

Procedures:

Introduction:

·         Ask students to share what they know about recycling and Earth Day.  With a show of hands, take a poll on how many students have recycled in the past.  Ask students how often they recycle and why they think it’s important.

·         LMS will then read a story about Clifford the Big Red Dog and how he helps his owners and neighbors clean up a vacant lot.

Body:

·         Students will actively participate in the read-aloud and be asked questions about cleaning their own homes and checking for vocabulary comprehension.

·         LMS will then show students two garbage pails, one brown and one blue.  Students will then be selected to dispose of various items into the proper garbage pail.

·         In order to reinforce the new learnings, students will go individually to the computers and play a recycling game, which requires them to dispose of 12 items into the proper pails.  LMS will remind students of what Clifford recycled in the story.

·         After each child successfully completes the game, we’ll come back to the rug and learn two fun songs about Earth Day.  This will reinforce what they’ve learned and leave them with a positive experience as they depart from the library.

Conclusion

·         Check for understanding and review what we learned about recycling.  Ask students if they’re going to recycle everyday from now on.  Ask them what they’re going to tell their parents/guardian’s tonight at dinnertime.

Assessment:
• Class discussions will determine students pre/post-knowledge
• LMS and Science Teacher will conduct observations during two hands-on activities. Students should place items in the proper pail.
• Successfully completing the online game and receiving a “Happy Earth” smile on the screen will show that student understood the concept of recycling.
• LMS and Science Teacher will interact with students all through the activities, especially those that may not be as computer literate.
