1. When students enter the library, the LMS and the teacher will lead a discussion on how to take notes and why taking notes is necessary. The responses will be listed on chart paper.
2. The LMS and the teacher will explain the importance and relevance of note-taking. Students have to take notes throughout their educational careers (high school, college, etc.) Even in teaching, teachers sometimes have to take notes during meetings.
3. The teacher and the LMS will then explain that they are doing a research project on a famous African-American person of their choice. An outline of the project will be discussed and the importance of precise research and why it is important. (An outline of the project is attached)
4. Then LMS will read the article on Barbara Jordan to students. The students will listen to the article and take notes on index cards using the 5 W’s (who, what, where, when and why).
5. Students will then be given their own copy of the article and read it independently. They will check to see if they took the correct notes.
6. Students will be able to choose a famous African-American person to research. They will take notes on that person using the 5 W’s. Half the class will go on the internet to suggested websites and the other half will use print references. Then they will switch.
7. At the end of the period, the students will share-out any questions or concerns and the LMS and the teacher will make clarifications on the projects expectations. The rest of the project will be outlined in a power-point presentation.
