Purpose
Learning Objectives:
1. Students will locate a specific/suggested website and extract information.
2. Students will answer specific questions while researching different kinds of Native American homes.
3. Students will navigate through websites and reference materials (See attached list).
Instructional Goals:
1. Students will access information effectively and efficiently.
2. Students will present information in a prescribed format.
3. Students will become familiar with navigation of suggested websites.
Motivational Goals:
1. Generate student’s interest in the research process.
2. Build students confidence in developing information literacy skills
3. Motivate students to continue learning information literacy skills.
Procedures
Introduction – Mini-Lesson
1. Before the teacher brings the students down to the library to being their research, the teacher will group the students into groups of 4. Their will be 6 different groups. 2 groups will research the Iroquois tribe, 2 groups will research the Sioux tribe and 2 groups will research the Pueblo tribe.
2. The teacher will tell the students their groups in class but when the students come down to the library, the groups will be on a chart for the students to visualize.
3. The LMS will ask students to brainstorm ideas about what they know about different types of homes. What are examples of different types of homes? The response will be listed on chart paper.
4. Then the LMS will show students the different tables and materials.
Table 1- Iroquois tribe – longhouses and elm bark
Table 2 – Sioux tribe – buffalo hide and wooden poles
Table 3 – Pueblo tribe – clay, sand, and straw
The LMS will ask students what they think Native American tribes used these materials for. Generate a list of ideas and write responses on chart paper.
5. The LMS will then ask how we can find out information on these 3 tribes and their homes. Discuss that it is called research. What is research and how can we do research?
6. Discuss that research is about finding answers to their questions and the different venues for finding research (books, magazines, videos, and the computer).
7. Students will then get into their groups and answer the first worksheet, what am I supposed to do? And what am I supposed to make?
8. Students will then look at the second worksheet and discuss the questions.
9. The LMS and the teacher will then divide the groups. 2 students from each group will use the computer and learn how to navigate the suggested websites. The other 2 students from each group will look at reference print materials and use those to answer their questions.
10. At the conclusion, students should have filled out both worksheets and answer at least 1-2 questions.
11. Each group will present to the class what they liked about the experience and any difficulties they encountered so next time the teacher and the LMS could fix any problems.
