Can We Help Leonardo?
Description:
This lesson is designed for first grade students. The lesson will be a read- aloud of Leonardo the Terrible Monster by Mo Willems. The teacher will read the book aloud expressively in voice and facial expression. Students will then be instructed to locate the interactive companion website designed to supplement the book. The students will be actively engaged in a variety of stimulating activities developing social interaction skills, reading, listening skills, knowledge of computer usage, critical thinking and creative self expression.
Goals & Objectives:


Instructional Goals:

1. Students will participate in a read aloud lesson they will pay attention and listen as the story is read and the illustrations are shared.
2. Students will utilize the lap top computers, access the Internet and access the website given.
3. Students will become familiar with the navigation of a specific website.
4. Students will complete a worksheet creatively in expression of their understanding and creativity of what a monster should look like.
5. Students will access information effectively and efficiently



Learning Objectives:

1. Students will learn the proper pronunciation of the spoken word.
2. Students will learn how illustrations express the meaning of book text.
3. Students will successfully follow directions for using a laptop.
4. Students will access a given website, and be able to move throughout the website performing various tasks.
5. Students will be able to relate the characters life experiences to their own life

1)Leonardo the Terrible Monster by Mo Willems
2)15-20 laptops so every student has a laptop to use
3)Overhead projector for the teacher to attach to her laptop so students can see what the teacher is doing, and so the boys and girls can follow along with the teacher
4)A printer attached to the teacher’s laptop

Introduction:
Boys and girls we are going to read another book by the author who wrote Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus  Mo Willems.  Boys and girls do you remember how much fun we had reading that book?  I am going to read this book, Leonardo the Terrible Monster and share the pictures with you. I need you to help me with your ears. We use our ears to listen. What do we do when the teacher is reading to the class?

Eyes on me, and please sit on your rug spot, crisscross apple sauce, your legs 
After we read the book, we will do some fun- filled activities.

Technique: Read Aloud
Method: Book to be read
The teacher will read the book aloud using voice inflection to express the dialogue of the picture book.  Students will be asked to participate with facial expressions and repetition of key dialogue.
 Such as “ and scare the tuna salad out of him!” and “ Yes!” cheered Leonardo.
“I did it! I’ve finally scared the tuna salad out of someone!”

Body:
The library teacher will introduce herself and ask  the boys and girls to sit on their rug spot with eyes on  me. We are going on an adventure to meet Leonardo the Terrible Monster.

The graphic pictures will be shared as the book is read aloud. Students will be invited to express their reaction to the pictures. The interactivity makes the experience of reading a lot of fun.

Throughout the reading students are asked to take turns participating, all input is welcomed.

As the book is read the meaning of   monster is discussed briefly. A listing of the student responses are written on a write board beside the teacher’s chair. The idea of friendship comes up in the reading. It  is explained and students are asked to  list qualities of a friend. Friend qualities are listed on the write board in a separate column from the monster list.

Methods:Upon completion of the book reading the teacher announces to the boys and girls. “ We are going to use the laptop computers to find information about Leonardo the Terrible Monster. Boys and girls please sit at your table and we will now use the laptops to find information about Leonardo and his pals”

 The teacher’s helpers are asked to help distribute the laptops to the class at their tables.

Each student has their own laptop and the library teacher has her lap top connected to a projector so students can see the step by step process to access the Internet and then the website.

Materials:
1)15-20 laptops so every student has a laptop to use
2)Overhead projector for the teacher to attach to her laptop so students can  see what the teacher is doing, and so the boys and girls can follow along with the teacher
3)A printer attached to the teacher’s laptop

Once students have received their laptop and are seated.
1. The teacher shows the boys and girls (in review) how to turn the computer on and access the Internet.
2. The students are given the website to type into the query:
 http://www.pigeonpresents.com/grownup.aspx
(They can attempt to type the letters, it may be difficult so the teacher and library teacher  are available to help)
   
Boys and girls let’s look at the website together:
Point the mouse on the first picture of the Pigeon and listen to what the pigeon says.
We hear the word Fun.  Here we can find some fun things to do.
Point the mouse on the second picture of the Pigeon holding a book and listen to what is said  Books.  Boys and girls if we click this picture we will find more  fun books to read written by the author , Mo Willems like Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and many more.

Point the mouse on the third picture with the green dinosaur and the bunny rabbit and listen to what is said .  We hear the word Pals.  Boys and girls Pals is another word for friends. Here we can find Leonardo’s friends

Point the mouse on the big question mark   ?   What do we hear. BUSES and what do you see?  (A bus rushing by)

Look for the word Leonardo the name of the terrible Monster (Children are instructed to click the word Leonardo.)

What is Leonardo’s favorite food?
What is his favorite color?
What is the name of Leonardo’s best friend?

Conclusion:
“Boys and Girls it is almost time to leave so let’s clean up our desks and close down the computers, we will visit Leonard the next class”. The teacher proceeds to print hand out sheets for students to do at home (see links below and print) They are asked to color the  picture of  Tony Leonardo’s friend  any way they like.
