What are the parts of a book?
Description:
Language Art teacher will work in collaboration with LMS on this unit.
This lesson is for third grade students. Students are going to learn particular parts of a book and the information included in each part. Also, they are going to learn how the fiction section is organized in the school library. Students will participate in many activities, such as, creative writing; locate books on the fiction shelf of the library, and oral presentation.

  • Students are going to learn the parts of a book and their functions

Learning Objectives: 

 

  • Students will learn the parts of a book
  • Students will write, bind, illustrate a book
  • Students will be read their own book
  • Students will shelf their books in the library

Motivational Goals:

  • Build students’ confidence in their ability to learn/use information skills.
  • Establish the importance of information skills
  • Students will be interested in becoming authors of their own fiction book
  • Encourage students’ on-going confidence in their ability to learn and use information skills.

 

Materials & Sources:
LMS shows picture books, PPT presentation, LCD, Laptop,  fiction books shelf, index cards, exercise sheet, Story web organizer, picture story board, book pages template, Step by step chart instructions, laptop cart, laminating machine, oral presentation.
Procedures:

Introduction:

The Media specialist ask questions:                                               

1. Which is your favorite picture book?                                    

2. What are the parts of that book?                                                      

3. Who is the author?

4.  Tell students what they are going to learn

and what is the purpose of learning it.

Body:

1.  The media specialists explains students what are the parts of the book. (spine, cover, author, illustrator, and title).                                                                                      

2.   LMS holds and shows the book and asks students to rename the parts of the book to reinforce learning.

3.  LMS teaches students what is a fiction book                                

4.  Explains fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order and use the first three letters of author’s name.  Ask students to write the first letter of their last name in an index card and put them on the board in alphabetical order.  Second ask students to write the first three letters of the last names of five classmates.  Then, students have to alphabetize this list.    

5.  LMS demonstrate the shelves so students can see how this section is organized.

 

Day 2

1. LMS explains students the parts of a story using a story web. 

2.  LMS addresses different learning styles by giving different graphic organizers to

students to write their story.   

3.  Students work cooperatively in groups and each students has a responsibility or

profession-author,  illustrator, and publisher.

4.  Librarian corrects the drafts of the students.

Day 3. 

1. LMS gives directions on how to complete the book                          

2. Students type their work and select the illustrations, laminate their pages and bound.                         

3. Students select a student to read the book.                           

4. Books are shelf by students in the fiction section                                            

 

Conclusion:

The lesson will conclude with oral presentations.  Students will share their experiences of being authors, illustrators and publishers.  Students can take out their classmates’ books and read. 

 

Assessment:
Learning Assessment Method(s):
• MLS and Art teacher work in collaboration observing and helping students.
• Rubric that shows that all students follow the process of publishing book.
• Students’ ability to incorporate and work in a group will be assessed.
