SLMS will develop a poetry appreciation unit in collaboration with a 5th-grade teacher through the introduction of poems by Langston Hughes. Students will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of listening, reading, speaking and writing activities about his poetry, including a research assignment about this writer. Motivational strategies include making connections between the ideas conveyed in Hughes' poetry and their own personal goals and aspirations as well as fostering an appreciation of this genre of literature
