Using Print and Non Print Resources in Animal Research
Description:
The students will investigate animal habitats and animal adaptations. The students will create a written report on the animal of their choice.
Goals & Objectives:

Grade Level: Third Grade

 

Students will be introduced to the Dewey Decimal System and its relationship on how we locate materials in the library.  Students will learn how to locate books in a library.

 

Third graders will perform successful searches using various websites and find two or three different books on their topic.

 

This lesson will generate interest in animals and the process of research as well as build self-confidence .

 

Materials & Sources:

Materials: Fiction, non-fiction books of animals, magazines ex. Ranger Rick and National Geographic World Magazine.

K-W-L chart

Chart paper to record vocabulary words-camouflage, adaptation, prey, habitat, and new words as they develop.

Data collection worksheet

Animal graphic organizer

Procedures:

Students will come to the library media center and sit in groups of four or six.

The teacher/library media specialist will facilitate accountable talk in regards to animals, adaptations, and animal habitats.

Teacher will use chart paper to record information on a K-W-L chart. 

Students will be asked to describe the animals coloring, skin or fur/hair texture and the animals habitat.

Ask students how animal habitats help them survive?

Students will complete the research project in three fifty minute sessions.

Students will work independently on the animal of their choice.

Students will use desk top or lap top computers for research.

Students will record information on data collection sheets.

 

Session Two

Students will work independently to produce a written report using date from they collected. (First draft)

 

Session Three

Students will work independently to create illustrations and create a cover for their research report.

Assessment:
Did the students accomplish their goal and produce a written reprt?
Assess written, grammar, spelling, information and illustrations.
Does the student feel confident and proud of their final product?
Students will share their reports with their peers.
