Gone but not forgotten: using reference resources to write an obit
Description:
Working with the ELA teacher, SLMS will introduce 9th grade students to the reference resources available in their "new" high-school library. After a lesson on research, students will find facts about a person and write an obituary using a minimum of three facts from at least two different media sources (i.e. - text, electronic database, on-line encyclopedia, website, etc.)

The students will select a famous historical figure to research and write that name on a piece of paper, but will unexpectedly drop the name into a hat and pick another. This lesson can be adapted for use with other teachers and topics of interest.
