This lesson is will be taught collaboratively with a 2nd grade classroom teacher and will tie in and support the author study unit they are doing in the classroom. As part of the classroom author study students will be learning about the author's life, reading many works by that author to determine the author's style of writing and the repetitive literary elements used throughout the author's work. If the author is also an illustrator, such as Ezra Jack Keats or Eric Carle, they will also be looking at the stylistic elements of the artwork and the materials used. To support this unit, students will be choosing their very own author to study. As part of this unit, students will learn about the organization of the library media center, how to use the library media center's tools, specific strategies for evaluating the content and stylistic elements of books to determine what they like and why they like it, and how to use technology to search for books and to express what they have learned about their chosen author. This specific lesson would be the second lesson in the unit and will prepare them for the next lessons which include exploring the library and using the online catalog.
