Materials & Sources:

- Laminated picture of a coconut tree

- Laminted alphabet letters with adhesive or velcro

- Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.

- Song sheet

Procedures:

Introduction: Students will arrive in library and sit in story area. Hanging in front of them will be a picture of a large coconut tree. LMS will ask students about the tree and how it is related to the alphabet. Next LMS will ask students if they know the alphabet song and to sing along.

Body: Announce now it is time for a special story about a coconut tree and the alphabet. Read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom.

Tell students we are going to read it again, this time they will act it out by placing the letters on the tree. Group students into groups of 2-3 and give each group letters.

When their letters are read aloud students will attach them to the tree. LMS will “shake” letters from the tree and spread them on the floor when they all fall down. Continue reading story and have groups come up and pick their letters off the floor as they are called being sure to point to the letters in the book. If students can not find the letters, allow others to help by naming the color of letter or location.

After collecting the letters from the students show where they can find more alphabet books in the library. Give students 10 minutes to look through books and check-out for independent use.

Conclusion: Have students return to story area for a  Chicka Boom chant.
