Where\'s The Answer? Using Reference Books
Description:
Students need basic information if they are to function efficiently in the library.  The purpose of this assignment is to prepare the student for future research assignments by exploring different sources and their use. Bookmarks with questions to explore using the resources adds an element of fun.
Goals & Objectives:
Students will be able to use resources appropriately, by learning  what kind of information is found in each and how it is arranged and retrieved.
Materials & Sources:

Students will use a number of different reference books:

  • Encyclopedia
  • Dictionary
  • Special References (Scholastic Atlas of Oceans, World Book\'s Encyclopedia of Flags, Science & Nature Guides on Insects, Science & Nature Guides, The World Book Student Discovery Science Encyclopedia, Reference Library of Black America
Students will also create questions on bookmarks.
Procedures:
-Present a variety of reference books as described under Support Materials, noting the appropriate use for each one, how each is arranged, and used. Then, have students perform the following activities with guidance, if necessary:

  • Students review formats of various reference books.
  • Students find the index section of the reference book
  • Students look at the set-up of the index (alphabectical order, sections and subsections)
- Next,  provide students with bookmarks that have questions on them.
- Divide students into groups of two or three.
- Have students work together in the group to answer questions on their bookmarks, using the references described above.
     
Assessment:

The following behaviors will be assessed:

  • Students staying on task
  • Properly following all instructions
  • Correct answers and page numbers (cite the source)
  • Ability to work in teams
