Description:
     This lesson was designed for fifth grade students to work as learning buddies performing research and reading with second grade students.  The students will be actively engaged in a variety of stimulating activities developing their social interaction, knowledge of computer systems, research, reading, critical thinking, and writing skills.
Goals & Objectives:
  1.  
    1. Students will successfully locate a specific website and extract biographical data from the correct link.

       

    2. Students will create a flow chart, chronologically highlighting events from biographical data.

       

    3. Students will be able to move throughout the website, performing various specified tasks.

Materials & Sources:

large chart paper, projector, whiteboard, laptops, printer, worksheets, rubrics

Procedures:

 Day1

 

  1. The 5th and 2nd grade classes working collaboratively are paired up as "learning buddies".  (large chart with names)
  2. Library Teacher introduces teaching point of lesson, technology to be utilized, and website URL.  (projector, white board, laptops)
  3. Students work with buddies to navigate their way through the website (http://wwwseussville.com) identifying/recording the function of each component.  (component worksheet)
  4. Students share worksheet answers and reactions to website with large group.
  5. Students make predictions as to what tomorrow's Seussville visit may bring.  (Broinstorm, record on chart)

 

Day 2-summarize previous day's work

 

  1. Learning buddies will locate the "biography" section of the website and read information.  (laptops)
  2. Students will extract one significant fact from at least 4 out of the 6 sections.
  3. Students will record the section heading as well as the facts on a flow chart in chronological order.  (flow chart worksheet)
  4. Students will share information with large group.  (oral presentations, display flow charts)
  5. Summary of day's work, discuss significance of this bio in Seussville.

 

Day 3-summarize previous day's work

 

  1. Learning buddies will locate the "catalog" section of the website and read information.  (laptops)
  2. Students will identify 5 books from the catalog section that are shelved in the school library.
  3. Students will locate one of these books and read with each other.
  4. Students will share how they found the book and/or their favorite lines from the book.
  5. Summary of day's work.

 

Day 4-Summarize previous day's work

 

  1. Learning buddies will locate the "storymaker" section of the website and read directions.  (laptops)
  2. Students will collaboratively write a story to become an author like Dr. Seuss.  (brainstorming, laptops)
  3. Students will share, save, and print stories.  (printer, story sheet)
  4. Summary of day's work.

 

Day 5-Summarize the week in Seussville.

 

  1. Learning buddies will locate the "playground" section of the website and choose an activity.  (laptops)
  2. Students will read/follow instructions to perform activities.
  3. Students will enjoy and have fun!
  4. Students will share their experiences of their week in Seussville!  (write/draw favorite experience, discussion)
