Becoming an subject expert and contributing to Wikipedia
Description:
Choosing one animal and focusing on the reproduction and behavior, the student will become an expert in the field using a variety of resources available in the library and on the internet. The student will then review the article in the Wikipedia and make any corrections or additions deemed useful as an expert in the area of research.
Goals & Objectives:
The Student will:


  • Learn to use a variety of library and internet resources to learn about the reproduction and behavior of an animal;

  • Understand the difference in "peer reviewed" reference sources and the Wikipedia;

  • Contribute to the internet by correcting and adding information to the Wikipedia.

Materials & Sources:
Procedures:

Choose a vertebrate. Use the library resources to become an expert on the reproductive behaviors specific to your animal.


Focus on these areas for your research: courtship, fertilization, gestation, and parental involvement.


Use the handout for more detailed information.


Use at least three different resources, make note of any discrepancies.


Go to the Wikipedia and review the entry on your animal.


Correct any errors you find in the article.


Add new information you have learned in your library research.


Remember to paraphrase in your own words, do not copy from the original source.


Cite your research using MLA format.

Assessment:
Students will:

-Turn in your notes taken on the handout.

-Print out your changes on the Wikipedia article.
