Non-Fiction Text Tools
Description:
Students will work in small groups using a worksheet and a Kids Almanac to complete a scavenger hunt in which they will locate, identify and explain the use of a variety of text tools and formats that aid in the understanding and comprehension of non-fiction usage.
Goals & Objectives:

TLWBAT:



  • correctly locate and identify a variety of text tools

  • demonstrate an understanding of how these different text tools aid in the comprehension and use of non-fiction materials

  • apply the skills learned in an upcoming research project

Materials & Sources:

Scavenger Hunt worksheet in which the text tools are listed. Worksheet is set up in table format with separate columns for identifying the page number the text tool is located on, a sample of the text tool found there, and an explanation as to how that text tool aids in the understanding of the information presented.


Kids Almanacs


Pencils


Overheads OR powerpoints showing the variety of text tools in real-world examples.

Procedures:

Review standards being covered and link to real life usage.


Organize class into small groups or partners paying close attention to creating balanced work groups in terms of differentiated instructional needs.


Distribute the worksheets and almanacs.


Review the types of text tools listed on the worksheet using overhead or powerpoint examples - if neccessary.


Explain the purpose and goal of the activity and check for understanding.


Begin scavenger hunt with instructional staff monitoring and offering support and guidance as needed.


Close activity with enough time to conduct a reflective activity by sharing aloud, journaling, completing a written prompt or some other activity.

Assessment:
Reflective activity and application of usage skills in upcoming research project. Text tool usage will be an area assessed on project rubric.
