List of Potential Presentation Projects
Grading Rubric
Collaborators: LMS, Language Arts Teacher
Introduction:
To begin the lesson the teacher and librarian will post the following questions on a board for an attention grabber as the class arrives.
The board will ask two questions the students need to write their best guess to: (stimulate inquiry)
1.What year was the television invented?
2.What year was the computer invented?
The students will answer the two questions and then the teacher and LMS will begin an open discussion of the answers and present the lesson. (brainstorming)
The teacher and LMS detail the project requirements. Students will receive a Note-taking Worksheet for the project that includes all components of the project and an area for them to make notes during the lesson. This will maintain their attention during presentation, expand learning, and provide a reference for future use as project continues.
Each student will select someone (parent, grandparent, friend, etc) to interview about an invention or innovation they experienced in his or her lifetime. (student choice) The person interviewed will select the invention or innovation to be discussed based on their experiences. The students will be reminded that different generations have had different inventions in their lifetime. The LMS will inform the students that the television remote is a new innovation and about 25 years ago you had to get up and change the television channel by hand. There will also be a dial telephone available for the students to check out.
Body:
-Some details and examples will be provided for students to gain perspective about what was 'new' twenty years ago and what was 'new' forty years ago. ( personal experience)
-Students will brainstorm ideas of inventions or innovations that have occurred. (brainstorming)
-Students will then discuss in small groups how life may have been different prior to the invention. (group work)
-A clear definition will be established regarding an invention and an innovation to ensure students understand. (expectations)
-Students will receive their interview worksheets, their rubric, and ideas for presentation options including an oral report, power point, brochure, commercial, etc.
Second Lesson
-Students will return to the LMC with their invention/innovation selected and the interview process completed.
-Students will then begin to research their invention/innovation and select relevant websites or books that detail the invention. The following websites will be provided for students to visit and obtain information.
-http://inventors.about.com/library/bl/bl12.htm
-http://www.inventorsmuseum.com/
-Students will obtain detailed information for their invention and complete the basic information sheet during their computer lab time in the LMC.
-Students will take the information to begin creating their presentation.
Third Lesson
-Students will present their invention to the class through one of the presentation choices
-A group discussion about how various inventions and innovations has changed life today as well as what may be in the future will conclude this lesson.
