Procedures:
RESOURCES REQUIRED:
-Library Catalog
-Books and materials about time and telling time
INSTRUCTIONAL ROLES:
-The library media specialist reviews or introduces students to the catalog and use of materials identified in the collection. The teacher initiates the activity and works with students to actually teach how to tell time.
ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES FOR COMPLETION:
-After the teacher has introduced students to the concept of telling time and to some of the devices used for time telling, the students may visit the library media center to find materials about how to tell time and the devices created and used in the past and present.
-The library media specialist introduces students to the catalog in the library media center and reviews either the screens or cards to discuss how to read the entries to find the material that is right for the information need. Students have a chance to practice looking for materials about time and how to tell time. The library media specialist asks students to think of subjects or words that most likely will lead them to materials on their subject. Students spend time looking for one item in the catalog that might be of use, and then locating the materials on the shelves. When they have finished, the library media specialist reviews the procedure for finding materials.
-The students also are introduced to one search engine and how to use it to find appropriate materials on the same topic. Websites can be bookmarked by the students.
-Materials are gathered and taken back to the classroom. The teacher reviews the materials with the students and conducts a quick review of how to tell time.
-A worksheet is provided to test how well the instruction went. Students are advised that they may use the materials they located to complete the worksheet.
FOLLOW-UP:
-The student may make up a daily diary page that shows different activities for the appropriate times of the day.
Assessment:
-Each student will locate an item about time in either the library catalog or on the Web. The materials selected are used to complete an activity on telling time.
