Students will listen to the story book “All You Need for a Snowman†by Alice Schertle, and then use prepared flannel board pieces to construct a snowman in the same sequence described in the story. This lesson is designed to increase student interest by teaching sequencing through the use of a relevant task – the construction of a snowman.
LIBRARY MEDIA SKILLS OBJECTIVES
The student will identify the components for completing a project as identified in a book or set of instructions.
CURRICULUM OBJECTIVES:
The story and activity may be incorporated into a science unit on the weather or a reading/language arts unit on sequencing.
MOTIVATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
The student will:
-become interested in the research process.
-understand the importance of information skills.
-experience increased confidence in research ability.
-achieve satisfaction in research accomplishments.

INSTRUCTIONAL ROLES:
-The classroom teacher or library media specialist prepares the flannel board pieces for retelling the story and conducts the activity.
ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES FOR COMPLETION:
-The library media specialist schedules a story time in which a special flannel board story is shared. Introduce the story by sharing the cover of Alice Schertle's book "All You Need for a Snowman" illustrated by Barbara LaVallee. It is a simple story that begins with one snowflake and grows to show how a snowman is made. Retell the story by using the flannel board pieces without sharing the pictures. When finished, remove the pieces from the board. Ask students to identify the events of the story in the correct sequence.
-As students share the events of making the snowman, place the flannel board pieces back on the board. Discuss how they might have done something differently. Provide students with copies of the Snowman Template to color and cut out the pieces. The students may follow along and retell the story as they past the pieces to a dark blue background. Display the snowmen.
FOLLOW-UP:
-Students may make a companion for the snowman.
-The student will use all of the components for making a snowman and put them together in the same order as the story told.
