Summarizing the Meaning of Quotations
The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to an important figure in black history - Martin Luther King Jr. - by reading the picture book, "Martin\'s Big Words" by Doreen Rappaport. In doing so, the student will develop an understanding of the diverse social, historical, and cultural dimensions represented by the Man and his words.
OBJECTIVE:
Given index cards with quotes by Martin Luther King, Jr., the student will read his/her quote at the appropriate time during a read-aloud session of "Martin\'s Big Words" by Doreen Rappaport.
Next, students will write a one paragraph summary of what their particular quote means to them.

Anticipatory Set
-Introduce Martin Luther King, Jr. and Black History Month.
-Distribute index cards with quotes to students and explain your procedure for reading the quote aloud (i.e: "When the book is facing you, you will read your quote to the class").
Body
-Read "Martin's Big Words" to the class. Provide guidance and support to students as they read their quotes aloud at the appropriate points in the story.
Conclusion
-Ask students to write a one paragraph summary of what their specific quote means to them.
