Description:
This lesson can be applied to any subject. In this specific lesson, students learn that research is relevant because they learn how to find out the veracity of what someone says is a fact. The game format increases attention to the process. Working as a group, increases the student's ability to be successful, which increases confidence in doing the research process. This lesson is most appropriate for second graders and those students needing initial experience with the information problem solving process.
Goals & Objectives:
The student will be able to evaluate the veracity of a fact by finding the correct information through the use of the information problem-solving process.
Materials & Sources:
1. PowerPoint Slide (Projector or printout)
2. Fiction book about ants, (ie. "Ant Bully" by Nickles)
3. Nonfiction book about insects
4. Nonfiction book about ants specifically (ie. "Thinking About Ants" by Brenner. The information on the PowerPoint slide must come from this resource).
5. Answer sheet
Procedures:
1. LMS explains game: students must figure out which "fact" about ants is incorrect. Students read 3 "facts" about ants from projected PowerPoint slide (see materials).
2. LMS asks students what resources in the library about ants will help them find the best information about ants. LMS provides three choices of books (fiction, nonfiction inappropriate, and nonfiction appropriate). LMS guides students in deciding, as a group, which book is the best to use for the task.
3. LMS reads the students' choice, while students listen to for information about the facts they are evaluating.
4. Students write name on answer sheet and chose the incorrect "fact."
5. LMS reveals the sources of the incorrect and correct facts in the book.
6. Students change incorrect "fact" to correct fact.
Assessment:
The teacher will assess student achievement by monitoring the conversation through the information problem-solving process and evaluating the student answer sheets.
