- access Alex using ibooks;
- use the Simple Search Screen to find a list of books that match their search topic;
- complete a worksheet to reinforce what they learned; and
- use the information from the results screen to physcially locate a book on their topic.
- using an online catalog empowers students to find their own books in the library
- using the computer is an enjoyable activity for students
1. Library media specialist (LMS) leads discussion on how students currently find books in the library using the card catalog. Students can search the card catalog to search for books by a particular author, title, or topic. Then LMS explains that students will learn how to use an online catalog, Alexandria ("Alex" for short) to search for books using a particular topic.
2. Model accessing "Alex" by going to the dock and selecting the proper icon.
3. Model topic search by typing in "penguins" and using the key.
4. Explain the results screen (number of books that match search; title, author, call number, and availability of book, down and back arrows, and home button.)
5. Partner up the students; hand out ibooks; have students login
6. Distribute "Alexandria Activity" worksheet. Talk the students through all the steps from accessing Alexandria to the results screen. Tell students to select a topic from the list provided and answer the questions on the worksheet. If time permits, have each partner physically find a book from their results screen.
