LIBRARY MEDIA SKILLS OBJECTIVES
The student will use a foreign language dictionary, encyclopedias, the Internet, and cookbooks to research the history of pasta.
CURRICULUM OBJECTIVES:
The student will:
-learn Italian words by researching a favorite food.
-trace the history of a particular food through different countries.
-expand his or her knowledge of food and food preparation.
MOTIVATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
The student will:
-become interested in the research process.
-understand the importance of information skills.
-experience increased confidence in research ability
-understand the value of information skills.
-achieve satisfaction in research accomplishments.

ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES FOR COMPLETION:
-Before the class starts, put samples from each type of pasta in a sandwich bag, one sandwich bag per student.
-Ask students to glue one sample of each kind of pasta to a piece of construction paper. Next to each sample, they write what they think it looks like. Encourage students to compare their ideas with each other.
-Pass the boxes around so that each student can copy the name of the pasta from the box next to the pasta shape. How many definitions agree or disagree with the name on the box?
-If the name on the box is in Italian, students use an Italian-American dictionary to match the name of the pasta with its description. If it is in English, use the dictionary to find the word in Italian. Note that the pasta name is often a diminuative noun form, incorporating 'small' or 'little.
FOLLOW-UP:
-Create word search or crossword puzzles like the sample provided.
-Create rebus sentences by using the alphabet noodles and shapes.
Examples:
Pass the sentences around and see if other class members can decode them.
-Create pasta pictures on construction paper. write the names of the different shapes around the edge over and over to make a frame for the picture.
-Use craft foam to create a special pin for each student to wear. Cut shapes (hearts, shamrocks, trees, or flowers, depending on the season) out of the foam. Create a slogan made up of alphabet noodles and/or pasta and glue these to one side. Tape a safety pin to the back of the foam so the pin can be worn.
-Look up the history of pasta in the encyclopedia and answer the following questions.
-Find recipe books for pasta. Compile a class recipe book of favorite dishes. Parents and students could plan a pasta potluck.
-If there are any Italian, Chinese, or other chefs in students' families or in the school neighborhood, invite them to share some of their recipes and memory associations with this food.
-Students can also find other information on the World Wide Web by searching for 'pasta.' The Web site of the National Pasta Association (http://www.ilovepasta.org ) has good information, as does the American Italian Pasta Company site (http://www.pastalabella.com )
