The Bare Facts about Bears
Description:
This lesson can be used to stimulate interest in the research process. It can be used to create anticipation and create a sense of confidence in the research process.
Goals & Objectives:
Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of bears Students will acquire information from a variety of sources Students will work cooperatively in groups
Materials & Sources:
Suitcase with an assortment of items including binoculars, compass, memo book, pencil
Procedures:

-Librarian will display a suitcase to indicate that they are going on a journey.

-Several items will be removed from the suitcase such as binoculars, compass, a small memo book and pencil and a sample piece of fur (rabbit skin could be used)

 

-Questions will be asked about the use of each item.

-Students will be asked what kind of animal they might be searching for.

 

-A video about bears will be shown for background information

-Students will participate in a brainstorming activity indicating various types of bears and specific facts they already know and what they'd like to learn more about.

 

-Each child will be asked to write their questions in their note-taking journals.

-Encyclopedias and non-fiction books will be displayed for browsing.

 

-Hints will be provided including the use of guide words, table of contents and index.

-Students will choose type of bear they would like to learn more about including brown bears, grizzly bears, polar bears.

 

-Small groups will be formed depending on interests.

-Students will access encyclopedias and non-fiction books for research as librarian circulates and observes students. Assistance may be offered if needed.

 

-Each group will prepare a book of bear facts. They may choose to create an electronic version using Hyperstudio or Powerpoint. They might choose to prepare text and photos using a word processing program.

-Each group will present their final project with the class

Assessment:
Students will be evaluated based upon the information included in their projects and presentations.
