Learning about Fairyales
Description:
This lesson was developed for 3rd and 4th graders to introduce fairytales. It can be used to teach students how to locate print and electronic versions of fairytales in the library.
Goals & Objectives:
Students will: Learn to use an atlas Locate fairytales in the library Learn to locate information using the Internet
Materials & Sources:
atlas picture book version of The Three Little Pigs Internet print-out version of The Three Little Pigs obtained by accessing websites such as http://www.ivyjoy.com/fables/index.shtml Computers with Internet access
Procedures:

-Students will be asked to brainstorm and identify familiar fairytales

 

-Titles will be noted on post-its and attached to large chart

 

-A brief discussion will follow about birthplaces of Hans Christian Andersen and the Grimm Bothers

 

-Students will be asked to locate atlases in the library

 

-Locate Denmark and Germany in atlases as librarian circulates and assists

 

-Students will locate fairytale section in the library

 

-Students will participate in a shared read-aloud of Cinderella

 

-Students will use the search engines on the Internet to locate electronic version of Cinderella as librarian assists

 

-Students will share ideas about the versions with a partner as librarian circulates and listens to comments

Assessment:
Librarian will question and observe students throughout the lesson. Students will be observed as they locate information using the atlas.Students will be observed as they locate print and electronic versions of favorite fairytale.
