Description:
This lesson about insect parts will generate interest in the research process. Puzzle pieces will be used to lead students in their quest for information. A variety of resources will be offered so students will feel that they can locate information with confidence.
Goals & Objectives:
The student will learn about parts of an insect.
The student will illustrate the parts of an insect.
Materials & Sources:
Picture of an ambulance drawn on chart paper
Mystery bag and puzzle pieces of insect
Large picture of an insect
Non-fiction insect books
Procedures:
-Display the picture of the ambulance and discuss where it is going
and what might be inside.
-Students will observe as mystery bag is removed from ambulance
and puzzle pieces are displayed.
-Student volunteers will be called upon to identify the specific type of insect it might be based upon color, etc.
-Students will be asked to locate insect pictures to guide them as the insect puzzle is pieced together.
-Librarian will review the importance of the Table of Contents.
-Students will be asked to work with a partner to locate an insect picture using the non-fiction books.
-Students will be asked to draw their specific insect indicating the various parts of the insect.
-Students will share their information with the class by combining the pictures and creating a book.
Assessment:
The librarian will observe as students access information from the non-fiction books. The illustrations will be evaluated to determine if the body parts are defined.
