Meet the Librarian from the Black Lagoon
Description:
This is a collaborative lesson that can take place with students in grades K- 4. Students are working on a Mike Thaler author study. Mike Thaler has written several humorous titles that would even interest reluctant readers. The Black Lagoon series is a favorite of mine.
Goals & Objectives:

Instructional Objectives:

-After reading several books written by Mike Thaler students will work in pairs to write him emails.

-Students will use Mike Thaler's webpage to gain information about his life.

Motivational Goals:

-Students will show interest in the information literacy task (compare/contrast) after listening to the engaging story.

-Students will find the task relevant by brainstorming questions about Mike Thalerthat THEY want the answers to.

Materials & Sources:
KWL chart Mike Thaler's web site: www.mikethaler.com
Procedures:
Students have shared several Mike Thaler selections in their classroom. Once in the library the library media specialist shares The Librarian From the Black Lagoon. Students compare and contrast the library in the selected title to the school library. Students create a KWL chart listing what they know about author Mike Thaler. Students brainstorm a list of questions that they would like to know about him. Teacher directs the class to his website at www.mikethaler.com . Students work with partners and select two questions from the KWL chart that they can answer from his website. Answers are written down and shared with the class. Class works together to write him a letter. Students work in pairs to send him an email that includes an introduction, a question about one of his books and two reasons that he should visit their school.
