Discover Biomes
Description:
Students, working in cooperative groups, will discover the characteristics of the Rain Forests, Wetlands, Forests, Swamps, Marshes, Mountains, and Deserts. Their final project will reflect what they learned. NOTE: There are many motivational strategies sprinkled throughout this lesson including a research celebration at the end! The lesson may need to be spread over multiple sessions to accommodate time constraints.
Goals & Objectives:
Students will be able to distinguish pertinent facts and organize information. Students will be able to properly use print and non print sources. Students will be able to work cooperatively in groups.
Materials & Sources:
Internet, non fiction books, magazines, encyclopedias
Procedures:

- The classroom teacher will introduce the students to biomes through a variety of videos.

 

- Chart what the students know and questions they want answered.

 

- Students will be placed in groups and select a biome to study.

 

- Mini lesson presented on the use of the table of contents and the index.

 

- The students will be immersed in all material pertaining to their biome, no notes will be taken; they will only be reading, absorbing and enjoying.

 

- Mini lesson presented on extracting pertinent information from their resources.

 

- Students will proceed to gather their information. As a group, they will read and discuss the information they find.

 

- Mini lesson presented on the importance and format of a bibliography.

 

- Students will be briefly introduced to the internet for their research. Websites for each biome will be previously selected by the Library Media Specialist and placed on Trackstar for easy access by the student.

 

- Each group will decide how to present their biome in the most informative, appropriate and interesting manner. (i.e.: puppet show, board game, news broadcast, big book, etc.) - Work will be edited and completed. - A research celebration will be held.

Assessment:
Each group will decide how to present their information to others. Students will be evaluated based on their quality of information and presentation style.
