New York, New York
Description:
This lesson is designed for third grade to be taught collaboratively with the LMS and the classroom teacher. The lesson can be integrated into the Social Studies lesson and be an introduction to a unit on the five boroughs.
Goals & Objectives:
As a class students will brainstorm a list of places to visit in NYC until a circle map is created to include all areas. Students will be active listeners as My New York by Kathy Jakobsen is read aloud. Students will use print and non print resources to locate information on New York City until a class tour book is created.
Materials & Sources:
My New York by Kathy Jakobsen Bookmarked sites that contain places of interest in NYC.
Procedures:

1. As a motivational strategy the LMS asks students, "Lets pretend we have a friend visiting us from China, what are some great places in NYC that you can take her to visit." The teacher charts the answers on a circle map until all students have an opportunity to share their information.

2. Review with students nonfiction and fiction. Skim the book entitled My New York written by Kathy Jakobsen. Ask students if they think that the book is a fiction or nonfiction title and allow them to share their responses. Students may also predict what the book is about from the title and viewing the illustrations.

3. Read the selection aloud and encourage students to be active listeners.

4. Review places that were visited and add the new ones to the circle map.

5. Tell students they are going to begin to work together to create a tour book for New York City.

6. Students are broken into two groups and partners are selected within the groups so that no more than two students are working together.

7. One visitation place is selected by each partner group.

8. Groups will alternate between print and non print resources.

9.Using the encyclopedia (students are familiar with using the encyclopedia) students will find out facts on NYC such as the population, area or climate. The internet will be used for selecting a place to visit and finding out where in NYC it is located, admission and a brief description of the place.

10.  Students share their information with the class

11. When all the iformation is completed it can be placed in a tour book entitled New York, New York.
