Endangered Animals - Why are they dying?
Description:
Students will be immersed in videos and a variety of non fiction books on endangered animals. They will be involved in selecting the questions they want answered about these animals.
Goals & Objectives:
The students will learn about their animal and why they are endangered. Students will utilize a variety of print and non print material to gather information. They will be able to work in cooperative groups.
Materials & Sources:
Videos on endangered animals. A variety of non fiction books, encyclopedia: Encyclopedia of Endangered Animals - Grolier Publishing.
Procedures:

- Students will watch a video on endangered animals.

 

- Students will write on a slip of paper questions they have about endangered animals, based on the video.

 

- Questions will be taped to chart

 

- develop a webbing of endangered animals. - The class will proceed to vote on which questions would be considered important enough to research.

 

- Students will be placed in groups of three by the classroom teacher. - Each group will select an endangered animal from pulling out a slip of paper from a bowl.

 

- The students will receive large index cards for note taking. One question will be written on each card. The answer will be written under the question. The bibliographic citation will be written on the back of the card.

 

- The classroom teacher and LMS will monitor the research progress.

 

- The students will create a powerpoint presentation with the information they locate on their animal.

Assessment:
The students will be assessed based on their powerpoint presentations and the information which they have located.
