Day 1
Students read The Great Kapok Tree written by Lynne Cherry before coming to the library. As a class using Kidspiration a bubble map is created of Rain Forest Animals that were found in the story. Students are told that they are going to work with partners and become experts on a particular rain forest animal. They have a job to share the information that they learn with their classmates. Display a graphic organizer on over head projector. Tell students that these are some things that they will need to find and review together. Diet, appearance, and habitat are things to look for. There is also a place for you to write additional facts that you select. Review rubric that the LMS and classroom teacher created together. LMS and classroom teacher work with students to brainstorm resources that they will be using. Explore several websites online and remind students that they are bookmarked on each computer. Review with students how to find websites that are placed in their favorites. The librarian shares several print resources that will be helpful in their research and informs students of where they can be found in the library. Students return to their classroom for the classroom teacher to assign partners. One partner from each group selects a rain forest animal's name from a brown bag. That is the animal that they will research.
Day 2-4
The class is divided into two groups. Half of the class is using bookmarked websites while the remaining half is using print materials.
After two days students switch resources to give each group a chance to use both print and non print resources. The teacher and LMS circulate while giving mini lessons as needed on using an index or encyclopedia.
Day 5
Students go to library in small groups to do finish research.
Day 6
Students orally present the information that they learned about the animal.
