Instructional Goal:
Third grade students will reacquaint themselves with the nonfiction section of the library and with life systems.
Learning Objectives:
1. Students will be able to find at least two marine mammal, amphibian and/or bird nonfiction books in the library.
2. Students will report about their assigned creature using the taught format.
3. Students will be able to verbally relate the life cycle of their assigned creature.
4. Students will score well on the State of Virginia Standards of Learning in this subject.
Motivational Goals:
1. Build confidence in finding material in the library.
2. Inspire students to explore the non-fiction section of the library.
3. Challenge students to discover new information in books.
Introduction:
1. Introduce Winky (the [live] leopard gecko) to students. Ask students about animals they know "what were they like when they were babies?" What were they like when they were/are grown-up?
2. Talk about what Winky was like when she was a baby.
3. Look at the chart and review the life cycle of animals.
Body:
1. Briefly review how to find something in the library. Send student to find the book with the bookmark peeking out "it's about geckos."
2. Review difference between fiction and nonfiction; review how books are numbered in a library, and about the section of the library where the reptile and amphibian books are kept.
3. We look at numbers on spines of books set out for the lesson.
4. Students will be paired up (drawing name pairs out of a fish bowl) and given a piece of paper with a question and a book's call number (these questions will be pre-selected to accommodate students' reading ability). The questions will be about the life cycles of various reptiles and amphibians.
5. The designated book will have a frog or gecko-shaped bookmark, which will have a list of the Dewey decimal system, tied to favorite subjects (dinosaurs, cooking, careers, machines, etc.). This will cue them that they are in the right spot, and give them the resource to answer their question. Students may use the designated book and others they find in the same section.
Conclusion:
1. When all have found their answer, we will reconvene and share the questions and answers we have found. Kids will take the bookmarks home.
2. LMS will post the questions and answers in the library for several weeks.
