Learning Objectives: Students will be able to:
1. locate the title and call number of a book in OPAC, given the author, using an author search.
2. interpret an OPAC record to differentiate between author and illustrator in the record.
3. define and differentiate between author and illustrator.
4. recognize that library has an organizational system.
5. uses card catalog (modify: add electronic catalog).
Motivational Goals:
1. Establish importance of information skills.
2. Maintain interest in the research process.
Prior knowledge: -OPAC introductory lesson -Subject-Title-Author (S-T-A) searching in libraries -Distinguishes between author and illustrator -Call Number tells where to find book in library
1. Model author search in actual OPAC (example: Steven Kellogg)
2. Model location of author in resulting OPAC records.
3. Point out that some of the results have Kellogg as illustrator not author.
4. Ask students how many books he authored and how many he illustrated.
5. Ask students to locate title in specific record and read it aloud.
6. Model location of call number in specific record.
7. Ask a student to walk to an area in library where book would be found. (Ask other students to respond "hot and cold" to assist in location.)
8. Using overhead, model completion of assessment tool, "Find the Book" worksheet.
Independent Practice:
1. Each student receives card with author name on it, worksheet, and pencil. 2. Each student does author search on OPAC, using name on card.
3. Each student completes "Find the Book" worksheet, as OPAC stations become available. (While waiting for an available OPAC station, students may do their book exchange.) Closure: One student will summarize today's lesson for the homeroom teacher. Follow-up: Re-teach as needed and reinforce concepts through further activities.
