Encyclopedia Comparison/ Relay
Description:
Providing guidelines to students and breaking learning into small manageable chunks are two techniques to reinforce students' confidence in their research ability. This lesson teaches students what to look for in an encyclopedia. It gives them guidelines and introduces the information in small chunks so students find the lesson useful and manageable. The lesson takes at least two sessions. First students compare online encyclopedias with print versions. The next session is a relay race with one team looking up topics on an encyclopedia online and one with a print version.

2. To Reinforce confidence in research ability.

Materials & Sources:
Computer workstations Internet or CD-ROM encyclopedia Print Encyclopedia Graphic organizer Relay topics
Procedures:

Session 1

 

1. Students locate pictures and articles in both print and online encyclopedias.

 

2. Compare the ease of use/or lack of it.

 

3. Fill in a comparison chart with items like availability, printing vs. copying, fonts, readability, searching vs. use of index, multiple volumes vs. computer workstations, etc.

 

Session 2

 

1. Relay -Divide the class into 2 teams: one at a computer station with an online encyclopedia and the other with a print set.  LMS gives a topic and the first team members race to locate it - such as cheese, Yeman, radio. Do 2 rounds so each team gets a chance at each resource. Prize for those with the best demeanor (may use demeanor as a topic, it may be a new vocabulary word) Conclusions may be drawn at the end of both sessions.
