THE MITTEN by Jan Brett: Integrating Literacy and Information Literacy
Description:
Student motivation is achieved by creating positive anticipation. They want to know what comes next. Using a wonderful children's book to lead students into lessons on Internet use is very effective in this lesson and brings in both literacy skills and information literacy skills.
Goals & Objectives:

1. Students will learn an appreciation of literature and other creative forms of expression.

2. Students will show understanding of a story through dramatization.

3. Students will use email to send a letter.

4. Students will brainstorm questions and dictate a letter.

5. Students will recognize the value of information skills.

6. Students will feel confident in their research ability.

Materials & Sources:
THE MITTEN by Jan Brett Computer with Internet access and printer Copier Rubber Bands or elastics for masks Chart Paper Scissors Crayons Evaluation worksheets
Procedures:

Pre-Activity:

 

Discuss what a student's mitten could hold. Introduce the story and explain that afterwards they will use the Internet to do some fun activities about the story.

 

Activities:

 Read and discuss the story

- is white a good choice for a mitten? How would Baba react to losing the mitten? What would it be like inside the mitten? Discuss the border and art work.

-Library Media Specialist models how to use Jan Brett's website, how to print pictures on the site, and discusses evaluating a website, including what students should look for. The "WebSite Investigator" Web evaluation form or other evaluation instrument may be used.

-Teacher and LMS assist students use of the website. The pages will be read to the students if they are not able to read them, especially information on the author, Jan Brett. The students will print out animal masks to color and make for a retelling of the story.

-The students will dictate a letter to Jan Brett and together show the students how to email it to Ms. Brett from her site.

-Students and the LMS will complete a web evaluation form about the site.

-Students will make masks and retell the story through dramatic play.
