A Salute to Children's Authors: A Third Grade Author Project
Description:
This author study is designed for third grade and requires 3 lessons of approximately one hour each (or can be adapted for shorter sessions) plus a few hours at home of reading and creating a project. The student will each chose an author and then will participate in reading, creative writing, speaking, and craft activities. You may wish to display the students written work and craft projects at a Family Literacy Event such as a Language Arts Fair! This lesson is designed to be taught collaboratively between the LMS and the classroom teacher and integrated into the Language Arts and Technology curriculum.
Goals & Objectives:

1. The students will locate, access and read books written by an author.

2. The students will locate, access, and read biographical information about the author.

3. The students will complete a graphic organizer and write a paragraph about the author.

4. The student will type the paragraph using word processing software.

5. The students will create a project and give a presentation about their author.

Materials & Sources:
  • graphic organizer (see included Word document);
  • list of author Websites; magazines with biographical information on authors; handouts with ideas for creative projects (how to make dioramas, mystery clue posters, character puppets, characters from soda bottles, etc. - see teacher's magazines);
  • rubric (see included Word document);
  • completed newsletters (see procedure #8 below)
Procedures:

CLASS #1

 

1. Together, the teachers and students will brainstorm and make a list of children's authors.

2. Student will choose an author from the list for an author study.

3. Students will use OPAC to search and locate 2 - 3 picture books or 1 - 2 chapter books written by their author.

4. Each student will search and locate biographical information about their author using Websites, a biography or magazines.

 

AT HOME

 

5. Students will read their books and biographical information at home..

 

CLASS #2

 

6. The students will a complete graphic organizer about their author. (see included word document)

7. Using the information from the graphic organizer, the students will write a paragraph about why they are saluting their author.

8. The students will type his/her paragraph in a word processing program and save to a disk. The teacher will later compile each paragraph into a newsletter or booklet to be presented to each student at the end of this unit.

 

AT HOME 9.

 

The students will create a project about his/her author or one of the author's books -diorama; mystery clue poster; book character puppet etc. (see PowerPoint)

 

CLASS #3

 

10. The students will give an oral presentation to the class talking about their author or reading the paragraph they wrote. Students may wish to dress up as the author or a character from a book by their author. They will also talk briefly about the project he/she created.

11. The teacher will present each student with a completed newsletter or booklet.

12. Have the students share their work by making a display of their work for others to see perhaps at a Family Literacy Event such as a Language Arts Fair !
