Is It Fiction or Is It Non-Fiction?
Description:
The purpose of this lesson is to review the differences between fiction and non-fiction books and to introduce students to the Webquest. The students will demonstrate knowledge of this by completing a Webquest and by comparing books about animals and deciding which is fiction and which is non-fiction. Procedures:

Day 1:

Students will enter the library and be seated in a group setting. The LMS will begin by explaining that the next few classes will be spent on a project that will help review the difference between a fiction book and a non-fiction book. Since the students are currently studying animals and will be visiting the zoo in a few weeks, we will be doing some animal research right here in the library. The students will be told that they will be having fun on the computer and also will be spending some time choosing books to read and will create a story and make a poster about the animal in their book.

During the last class, we will be presenting our displays to the class and explaining why our display is fiction or non-fiction. The concept of a Webquest will be explained to the students using an example via LCD projector. The students will be walked through the Webquest so they all understand what their task will be and what the expectations are for them. Explain that part of their task is to choose an animal from the Webquest to find a book about. They will be assigned to groups that will include a writer, reader, artist, and storyteller. We will discuss what each person's job will be.

Each group will also be assigned to either fiction or non-fiction. They will then compose a story and create a poster of their animal as portrayed in the book. The students will be told that they will work on the Webquest in groups of four. Teams will be assigned ahead of time. The students can choose as a group which type of animal they want to research. Explain that after completing the Webquest and choosing an animal, they must choose a book about the same type of animal to demonstrate their understanding. After reading the story, they will write a story and create a poster about the animal. Students will be using crayons, markers and colored paper to complete their project.

Day 2: Students will be put in groups of four at the beginning of class today. We will briefly review the Webquest and what their task is. We will also review what responsibilities each job includes. They will complete the Webquest as the LMS circulates to answer questions and offer praise or motivation as needed. Students will utilize the entire class period to complete the Webquest and gather factual information about their chosen animal.

Day 3: Today there will be discussions regarding some of the things the students found while completing the Webquest. The LMS will ask if they enjoyed the Webquest and if they found it interesting and fun. The class will also discuss some of the facts they obtained about the different animals. Next the students will browse through a group of selected books available to them on a big table. They will have the opportunity to look through and read books until they find one that interests them for the story and poster.

Day 4: This class will be spent allowing the students to write a story and make a poster about their book. They can draw their favorite part or something about the animal, or use their imagination. The students will be reminded that their picture should correspond with the type of story that they were assigned.

Day 5: Today students will share their displays with the class. The groups will each show their display along with the book that corresponds. The other students will have to guess if it is a fiction or non-fiction book and the LMS will encourage students to discuss why.

Conclusion: At the end of class, artwork will be displayed with the title and author of their book. The fiction pictures will be grouped together and non-fiction grouped accordingly. The lesson will be concluded by reviewing what was learned about Webquests and how we distinguish between fiction and non-fiction.

Assessment:
1. Are students expressing interest and excitement about the lesson through body language and facial expressions

2. Do students understand how to complete a Webquest

3. Can students distinguish the difference between a fiction and non-fiction picture book?
