My Middle (P)ages
Description:
Students explore life in the Middle Ages. Through research, students learn what life was like in the times between the 5th Century and the 15th Century in Western Europe. Students find pictures to write narratives on, presenting them in scrap-book form.
Goals & Objectives:

Instructional Goal: Students will learn how to access internet resources and how to find print resources in the library for a given topic.

 

Learning Objectives:

 

1.) 6th Graders will locate 3 internet or database resources for their Middle (P)ages project.

 

2.) 6th Graders will locate 2 print resources for their Middle (P)ages project.

 

3.) 6th Graders will determine what topic from the Middle Ages they want to present in their scrap-book.

 

Motivational Goals:

 

1.) Generate interest in the research pocess.

2.) Build confidence in research ability.

3.) Maintain interest in the research process.

4.) Reinforce confidence in research ability.

5.) Promote satisfaction in research accomplishments.

Materials & Sources:
Middle Ages transparency, picture from internet or poster. The pictures included here are taken from Encarta '99.Concept Map Online Databases OPAC for books in LMC Pre-Selected web pages on Middle Ages. Bibliography sheets.
Procedures:
Students enter the LMC to find a picture depicting the Middle Ages on the overhead projector. The LMS asks (and writes responses on white board), "What can you tell me about this picture?" Some expected answers would be: Vikings, Boats, etc. Asking them what time period this is taken from will generate thought on the Middle Ages. Further questioning on what they think life was like back then will generate more responses to add to the white board. Building on the vocabulary they have already developed about the Middle Ages will generate responses such as Serfs and Feudalism. The LMS establishes that this project is an extension of the unit they've been covering on the Middle Ages and will wrap up with a scrap-book style presentation of their research. LMS hands out concept map to allow students to jot down their ideas and focus on one main topic from the Middle Ages. The LMS should discuss other topics that may interest them, which they can add to their concept may. They may choose these topics also (e.g. Arthurian Legends, Music and Art). LMS will remind students how to fetch the pre-selected web pages that will be found in the LMC homepage.LMS asks students to remind her where they will be locating information. Students will indicate by pointing (as the LMS names each section) to books, encyclopedias, and computer area/lab. LMS will assist in student research answering questions and guiding students to proper resources. Students will find three online sources and two print sources. A bibliography will be kept on a separate handout. Students will be given construction paper, white printer paper. They will copy and cut pictures, gluing them onto paper. Students will write captions to go with their pictures. The captions must be at least 3 sentences long.
Assessment:
LMS periodically checks each student's bibliography to be sure they are finding the appropriate and required resources. It is also checked for accuracy.LMS and teacher check each student's topic choice to be sure it is relevant and enough information can be gathered to make a scrap book style report, with cover and summary. Student will present their scrap-books as an oral report to the class.
