Awareness of How Most Consumer Goods Are Created
Overview:
Objective:

To increase awareness of the conditions under which most consumer goods in the United States are created.

9:15-9:20

Students enter classroom joining in the singing of "He Reigns" by Newsboys playing on the computer w/ lyrics projected onto the front and center whiteboard. (Make sure they bring their "Religion Journals")

9:20-9:25

Ask the students to write examples of what they consider a bargain in their journals. Share experiences of "getting something for a bargain." Discussion- What did it "cost" in terms of time and effort to get the bargain?

9:25-9:30

Help students consider how much time and energy we put into getting bargains at Christmastime. Ask if they've ever considered where the things they buy were made and by who? What responsibility do we have for the rights of the workers who produce our goods?

9:30-9:35

Point out how easy it is to become consumed by the secular gift-giving frenzy encouraged by our culture and inner drives.Tell the students they will read an article that will help them understand what the Gospel has to say about gift giving.

9:35-9:45

Activity- As they read "The True Cost of Christmas Bargains" give the hand-out that asks questions about the article.

9:45-9:55

Conclusion- Facilitate a discussion on the causes and effects of of sweatshop labor.

9:55-10:00

write a reflection in your religion journal on your attitude towards what Jesus teaches about treating the poor and vulnerable in light of gift giving during Christmas. Finish for homework. Tell your parents what you learned. Go to www.sweatfree.org/shoppingguide to find examples of goods offered by sweatshop free businesses. Have the students tell something they learned etc. as they walk out making a joyful noise along with "He Reigns".
