Setup/Preparation: Teacher should have already copied “My 5 Senses” worksheet for the class, and prepared fruit samples for students.
Direct Instruction:
Gen. ed. Teacher opens lesson by explaining to students that they will be building on their knowledge of descriptive words. Teacher will then tap students’ prior knowledge on their senses.
(Students will transition to meeting area)
Librarian will read My Five Senses by Aliki. Librarian will stop and question students as needed to ensure that they are following the story.
Gen. ed. Teacher will then point objects out around the classroom and ask students: How does this look, smell, sound, or feel? Teacher may also ask how certain foods served in the lunchroom taste. Spec. ed. Teacher will chart descriptive words that students use to answer those questions.
Modeling and Guided Practice:
(Students transition into their groups)
Spec. ed. Teacher explains that students will now experience food through their five senses. Teacher will project “My Senses” worksheet on the Smart Board. Teacher will explain to students how they are to fill in their sheets.
**Note: Each group will be assigned the same fruit.**
All teachers will help distribute fruit samples and worksheets. Students will then examine their assigned fruit and fill in their sheets.
Each student in the group will be assigned a number (1-5) and given a post-it. Students will then stick their descriptive word to the picture of their fruit on the Smart Board.
Independent Practice:
As a final assessment, students will choose their favorite food and describe it through their five senses. Each student writes five complete sentences using appropriate descriptive words to describe their favorite food.
As students are working on this task, all teachers will circulate to provide assistance where needed and to evaluate student progress.
Sharing and Reflecting:
One or two students from each group will be called to share their work. During writer’s workshop, teachers will support students in editing their sentences. Finally, their work will be published and displayed on the bulletin board.
