Setup/Preparation: School librarian must gather materials (listed in resources), a bucket of bones with sand, dinosaur puppet and costume.
Direct Instruction:
Librarian will greet students as Mr. Bones and reinforce what he does as a paleontologist and reiterate facts from the story and connect them to himself. The dinosaur puppet will be used to help maintain focus and capture attention. Mr. Bones will have a book talk and in addition to the talk, have a fossil hunt and discuss dinosaur books leaving them for the classroom teacher and students to use. Mr. Bones will read the students’ letters outloud and answer their questions, connecting the book facts to their knowledge. Children will then be allowed to dig up some bones in the bucket of sand.
Modeling and Guided Practice:
Librarian (Mr. Bones) will model how to dig up the bones from the sand and brush off the bones. He will guide them to take care as bones are fragile. A visual representation of the “rules” from fossil collection will be used on the Smartboard to ensure understanding for nonauditory learners. Mr. Bones will hold up Mr. Bones, Fossil and Dinosaurs of Watherhouse Hawkins and ask if the books are true or made up? Fact (nonfiction) or fiction? Then, Mr. Bones will hold up Dinosaur Bob, Danny and the Dinosaur and How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight and question if these books are true or made up? Fact or Fiction? How do you know? A discussion about nonfiction and fiction will continue to help students understand this idea.
For example, when he finds bones do they talk and sing? No, he reports just the facts. After students each find a bone and display them, Mr. Bones will sing Dem Bones as a culminating activity and promise to answer their individual letters.
Independent Practice:
Students will visit the library and have a choice between “fact” nonfiction or fiction books. They will show the librarian their selections and discuss whether they are fact or fiction books and why. Some students will have support in the Library environment so they do not feel overstimulated. Fiction and nonfiction books will be placed on a table away from the congestion of the other students. The students will select fiction and nonfiction books from the table.
Sharing and Reflecting:
Librarian will question students what type of book they like best, fact or fiction and share why. A visual representation of the questions will be used on the Smartboard to ensure understanding for nonauditory learners. Mr. Bones was a paleontologist; would any of you like to be a paleontologist? What job do you think you would like to do in the future? Some students will brainstorm with an adult their interests and how that could possibly lead to job choices for the future. Where can you find out more about jobs you might like? What did you find out about Mr. Bones that you did not know before? Reflect on the response to their letters.
