Available resources for high school seniors
Overview:
This lesson is designed to help high school seniors plan for life after graduation. Students will be given the opportunity to familiarize themselves with available resources online, in the library, and the guidance office to research college/career/military opportunities. They will create a presentation to be given to the class based on their individual career explorations.

Instruction / Activities:

Activities:

1.  Introduce the lesson by showing short clips of various movies/television shows (Dirty Jobs, Office Space, Scrubs, etc.) to generate small group discussions on student career planning and expectations.

 

2.  Introduce the guidance counselors who will present the various sources housed in the guidance department, and demonstrate how those resources are used.

 

3.  Allow time for a Q&A between counselors and students.

 

4.  Students end the lesson by taking an interest survey which will be used by the teacher and librarian throughout the rest of the unit to help guide students during their individual career searches and final project conclusion.

 

5.  Wrap up the lesson by giving a brief summary of the librarian's presentation which will take place the following day and ask students to think about any questions that were not answered by the guidance department.
