Setup/Preparation/Introduction: Teacher should have already written both food poems to be shared on chart paper. The descriptive words in the second poem should already be covered using sentence strip. Teacher should also inform students of their groups to facilitate a smooth transition for cooperative learning. Each group should have 5 students.
Direct Instruction:
Gen. ed. Teacher opens lesson by tapping students’ prior knowledge of descriptive words. Teacher then explains that descriptive words help make our writing exciting. Teacher tells children that they will be learning about descriptive words through poetry.
(Students transition to meeting area)
Librarian then introduces the poem “Eat at Moe’s” by Carole Boston Weatherford. Librarian does read aloud. During the reading, the librarian may stop to ask students questions to ensure that they are following the poem.
Gen. ed. Teacher will do the second reading of the poem. For the second reading, the teacher is using chart paper on which the poem has already been written (or on Smart Board). Before the reading, the teacher explains to the children that they will be identifying the descriptive words. The teacher uses the pointer during this reading. Prompting/support is provided as needed. Teacher charts descriptive words as listed by the students.
Modeling and Guided Practice:
(Students transition back to their seats)
Spec. ed. teacher then explains to students that they will use descriptive words to fill in the blanks in another poem. Teacher reads poem (from chart paper or from Smart Board) through one time with blanks. Before the second reading of the poem, teacher tells students that they will participate by raising their hands and suggesting a descriptive word to fill in the blank. Those students will be asked to write their words on post-it notes and stick them on the appropriate blanks. To conclude this piece, the class will then read the completed poem aloud with the teacher.
Independent Practice:
(Students will transition into their groups as previously assigned by teacher)
Once children are seated in their groups, Gen. ed. teacher will then assign a food to each group. The teacher will explain to children that they are to make up their very own mad-lib about their food. Each student in the group must use a different descriptive word in their mad-lib.
At this point, all teachers are circulating the room and assessing student progress.
Sharing and Reflecting:
Teachers will then lead students in share-out. Each student will be asked to share the descriptive word that they chose to describe their food. Selected students will be asked to share their complete mad-libs.
