The teacher will bring in a food item or a picture of the food item. Make sure it is something that would be made with a recipe. The teacher will then ask the students if the item is healthy for you. After students have answered whether it is or not, the teacher will tell students that she wants to be absolutely sure and she wants to learn more about the cultural background and other factors of the food. She will ask students to come up with ideas of where to find this information, and she will write each idea on the board. After the students have listed several ideas, the teacher will go through each information source and show the students how to obtain information from these resources. The teacher will make sure to model the proper and improper ways of searching for this information. The students will then each be handed a piece of paper and a pencil. They will then be given five minutes to brainstorm things that they would like to learn more about. When they have finished, the teacher will call on students to share their ideas with the class and write their ideas on the board. She will then let the students explore the library to find information on these topics. The teacher will be sure to monitor the students and offer assistance when needed.
