Becoming familiar with different reference sources
Overview:
Students will be instructed on each reference source as it is pulled from an ornate treasure chest.
Teacher will ask students where they would look to find the answers to specific questions..in which resource?
Students will view a power point and a discussion will ensue
Teacher will organize students into scavenger teams that will hunt
for the answers, completing a worksheet
Collaboration Potential:
May be used in conjunction with grades doing research papers

Objective(s)/Core Standard(s):

Students will show their understanding of general reference sources found in media center.e.g. encyclopedias, picture atlases, dictionaries, maps, globes, newspapers, almanacs, indexes by completing

a treasure hunt and correctly locating 80% of the answers.

 

Formative Assessment(s) (What will you do to make sure the students understand the objective being taught?): Students will participate by volunteering answers as a PowerPoint is shown. The need for more instruction should become evident as they try to answer correctly. Question/answer treasure hunt for the answers will test their ability to use reference sources.

 

 

Anticipatory Set (pre-assessment, motivational strategy, attention grabber):

A large ornate treasure box will pique students’ interest.
