1. Teachers will create questions from their core curriculum to give to students. These topics will be used as a guide while students familiarize themselves with resources. (Review supporting files for examples)
2. Teachers will set up library time and ask the librarian to review and teach students what reference resources are available in their library.
3. Teachers and students will take one class period to review library references. Students need to become familiar with atlases, dictionaries, encyclopedias, biographies, non-fiction books on history. Librarians can also use online resources according to what teachers would prefer.
4. After students have had time to look through different resources in the library they will be assigned the topics that teachers choose. For example
From Social Studies 8th grade core
A. Where did the English settle in America and what were the names of some of the first settlements?
B. Who were some English explorers and what did they contribute most to settling the Americas?
C. Where did the people from the Netherlands settle and how long did their settlement stay intact?
D. Who helped finance trips to America from different countries? How did the financiers benefit from their investment?
E. Where were the major settlements in the early history of America? Why do you think countries choose to settle in these regions?
5. Students will be assigned a topic and be given the handout under supporting files.
6. Students will then go into the library and through trial and error by using what they have learned about library reference material find information on their topic.
7. Students will fill out their worksheet and hand in to the teacher.
Wrap up:
This lesson is to teach students what references are available to them in the library. Students will be exposed to articles, maps, images, and web resources to learn what references they have access to. Students will learn Big 6 number 3 Location and Access by becoming familiar with reference in the library. Students will learn location by becoming familiar with what resources the library has. Students will learn access by comparing what resources worked best by giving them the most relevant information on their topic.
