Community Building (Part of The Whole)

Description:
Children need to know their community. This lesson plan is to teach them that they are part of their community. It also to teach them how they are part of the bigger community (from neighborhood, school, village/town, city, county, state, country, to world).

This lesson plan may not be finished in one session. This can be activity for one week.
Goals & Objectives:

  • Students learn about community
  • Students learn that they are part of the smallest to biggest community.(family to world)
  • Students know the leader of their community

 


Materials & Sources:
  • picture of body parts
  • city map
  • map of county
  • map of state
  • map of country
Procedures:
Introduction of concept "Part of the Whole"
  1. Teacher present picture of body parts (hand, feet, head, fingers, etc).
  2. Ask student how that body parts are part of a body.
  3. Teacher explain that students are part of something. Let them guess. 

Community

  1. Students may say something that related to family, school, neighborhood. Explain to them that all of that things are their "Community"
  2. Starting from the smallest community, Family. Each student is a part of a family. Let students mention about their siblings, parents, grandparents, cousins, etc.
  3. Then move to the bigger community: School, Neighborhood. Teacher can show the school/the school area map.
  4. Move to the bigger community: Village/ town. Show the map, and point out where the school area is. Let them point out the neighborhood around their home. 
  5. Move to bigger community: City. Show the city map. And point out where the school village/town located.  
  6. Move to bigger community: County. Explain what a "county" is. Then show them that the city is part of a county. 
  7. Move to bigger community: State. Explain what a "state" is. Then show them the state map, and how the county is part of the state.
  8. Move to bigger community: Country. Show the country map, and how the state is part of the country.
  9. Last one: World. Show the world map, and let them point where their country located. Then explain that each country is part of the world. 
  10. Teacher can always review again (from the smaller to bigger community) everytime the class is ready to move to bigger community. 

Note:

  • Teacher can also mention about leaders of each community (e.g. School principal, Mayor, Governor, President, etc).
  • Playing puzzle (State/ Country) would be a good activity too. 
  • Teacher can ask student to choose one community they want to explore more. Teacher can divide the class into groups (each represent one community).
Assessment:
Formative Evaluation:
- ask student the order (from small to big, or vice versa) of the community they live in, each time class ready to move on to bigger community.

Summative Evaluation"
- ask student to do a small presentation about the community they chose. Guideline for presentation; students mention about:
1. the name of the community (e.g. State: NY)
2. the nickname (if it has nickname, e.g. NY state is The Empire state)
3. the leader of the community
4. the area adjacent to their community (state around NY: MA, NJ, PA, etc)
5. the smaller and the bigger community after their community (e.g. smaller than State: City, bigger than State: Country)
