Day 1:
Invitation to Learn: Read students the story “The Great Graph Contest” by Loreen Leedy.
Task Definition: Students are going to create a graph based on a class survey.
Divide class into partners. Each pair of students will be given a survey slip that will inform them of their survey topic. Examples are: flavors of cereal, ice cream, bubble gum, candy, milk shake, etc. Have partnerships decide five different flavors they are going to include in their survey. Students will be given a class list and chart for record keeping purposes. Students will then survey class members. It is important that students understand that each student only be questioned once and that responses are marked carefully to maintain integrity.
Day 2:
Students will be shown the Sunlink web site, http://www.sunlink.ucf.edu/ where they will be able to input their data in order to create a graph. Students will be directed to the “student” section where they will access the information literacy tab. From there they will scroll down to “create a graph”. Using an overhead template of the “data” form, I will show students which information belongs in the table. Once data has been entered, students can preview and print their bar graph.
Day 3:
Students will present the information provided by their graph, including a summary statement of the results of their survey.
Extension: Students could choose and create their own variety of graph: pie chart, venn diagram, pictograph, etc.
